Cherries from Cranz

Cherries love warm, dry ground and suffer if their roots are exposed to wet earth for too long and the ground lacks air.

Consequently our sweet cherries are grown under the best conditions in Cranz, because the marshy soil there is light and well aerated. In some parts the upper layers of the ancient river valley sandbanks even emerge at the surface. Proximity to the Elbe means the climate is milder than further inland, which makes the cherries ripen earlier and gives them their unique taste.

A roof of plastic sheeting protects the fruit from heavy rain, which could cause the cherries to burst their skins. After blossoming we also close off the sides with fine-meshed nets to stop fruit flies from laying their eggs in the cherries.

This rules out the growth of maggots in the cherries later on.
